Why does my car stall at stop signs?
Common causes
When you come to a stop, the engine should drop to a steady idle. If it stalls, the most likely culprits are a dirty or faulty idle air control (IAC) valve, a carboned-up throttle body, or a vacuum leak. These affect the engine's ability to maintain idle speed when the throttle closes. On newer cars with electronic throttle control, a dirty throttle body can cause the same issue. Other possibilities include a failing mass airflow sensor, worn spark plugs, or a weak fuel pump.
- Dirty throttle body
- Faulty idle air control valve
- Vacuum leak
- Bad mass airflow sensor
- Worn spark plugs or ignition wires
Diagnosis steps
Start by checking for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) with a scan tool. Codes like P0505 (idle control system), P0171 (lean), or P0300 (random misfire) can point you in the right direction. Inspect the throttle body for carbon buildup and clean it with throttle body cleaner if needed. Check vacuum hoses for cracks or loose connections. If the car has a cable-operated throttle, test the IAC valve according to service information; it should hum or vibrate when the key is on.
When it's something else
If the basics check out, consider a torque converter clutch (TCC) that isn't releasing on an automatic transmission. This can feel like the engine is being dragged down and stalling when you stop. A failing crankshaft or camshaft sensor can also cause stalling, often without warning. If the stall is intermittent and no codes are stored, a mechanic may need to monitor live data to catch the problem.
- Torque converter clutch not releasing
- Faulty crankshaft or camshaft sensor
- Fuel pressure dropping at idle
- EGR valve stuck open
Common mistakes
- Replacing parts without diagnosing: throwing an IAC valve or throttle body at the problem can be expensive and may not fix it.
- Ignoring a check engine light: even if the light isn't on, pending codes can be stored and help diagnose the stall.
- Assuming it's always a vacuum leak: while common, stalling can also be caused by electrical or transmission issues.
