How do I reset the oil life light?
Common Reset Methods
On many older vehicles (especially GM), turn the ignition to ON (engine off), then fully press and release the gas pedal three times within five seconds. Turn the ignition off, then start the engine. The light should be reset.
On many newer cars, use the steering wheel or dashboard buttons to navigate to the oil life menu in the driver information center. Select 'Reset' or 'Oil Life Reset' and confirm.
Some vehicles (like many Hondas) have a dedicated reset button on the instrument cluster. Turn the ignition on, press and hold the button until the oil life indicator blinks, then release and press again if needed.
If the Light Won't Reset
If the procedure doesn't work, check your owner's manual for the exact steps. Some models require the engine to be running, while others need it off.
On some cars, the oil life monitor can only be reset with a scan tool. If you can't reset it manually, a mechanic or auto parts store with a scan tool can do it for you.
If the light comes back on immediately after resetting, there may be a fault in the system, such as a bad sensor or wiring issue. Have it checked.
Common mistakes
- Assuming all cars use the same reset method; procedures vary widely by manufacturer and model year.
- Resetting the light without actually changing the oil; the monitor tracks oil life based on driving conditions, not just mileage.
- Confusing the oil life light with the oil pressure warning light; the latter indicates a serious problem and should not be reset without diagnosis.
