How do I read OBD-II codes?
Steps to read codes
First, locate your car's OBD-II port. It's usually under the driver's side dashboard, within 2 feet of the steering column, but can also be near the center console or under a small cover. Turn the ignition to 'ON' (engine off or running, depending on the scanner) and plug in the scanner. If it's a Bluetooth dongle, pair it with your phone and open the app.
Next, use the scanner's menu to select 'Read Codes' or 'Diagnostic Trouble Codes.' The scanner will communicate with the engine computer and display any stored codes, along with freeze frame data (a snapshot of engine conditions when the code set). Write down the exact codes—they're your starting point. Many scanners also show pending codes and permanent codes.
- Find the OBD-II port under the dash, usually near the steering column.
- Turn ignition to ON (not start) unless the scanner says otherwise.
- Plug in the scanner and select 'Read Codes' from the menu.
- Write down all codes, including pending and permanent ones.
- Look up the codes online or in a repair manual for meaning.
- Don't clear codes until you've noted them and done diagnostics.
Understanding what you see
Codes are formatted like P0420: a letter for the system (P = powertrain, B = body, C = chassis, U = network) and four digits. The first digit tells you if it's generic (0) or manufacturer-specific (1). The second digit identifies the subsystem (1 = fuel/air, 2 = fuel/air, 3 = ignition, 4 = emissions, etc.). The last two digits pinpoint the exact fault.
A code only tells you which circuit or system is out of range—it doesn't always name the failed part. For example, P0420 points to the catalytic converter efficiency, but the root cause could be an oxygen sensor or exhaust leak. Use the code as a clue, then test components to find the real problem.
Common mistakes
- Clearing codes before writing them down, which erases valuable diagnostic history.
- Assuming the code names the exact broken part instead of the affected circuit.
- Using a scanner while the engine is off when the tool requires the key on, engine running.
