Why is my brake light on?
What It Means
The brake light (usually a circle with parentheses or the word 'BRAKE') can mean several things. If it's on while driving, it often indicates that the parking brake is not fully released, low brake fluid, or a fault in the braking system such as worn brake pads or a leaking brake line.
In some cars, the same light serves as a parking brake indicator and a brake system warning. If the light is red and stays on, it's a serious safety issue. If it's amber, it might indicate a less critical issue like worn brake pads or a disabled traction control system.
- Parking brake engaged
- Low brake fluid
- Worn brake pads
- Leaking brake line
- Faulty brake light switch
- ABS or traction control issue
What to Do
First, check if the parking brake is fully released. If it is and the light remains on, check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir. If it's low, there may be a leak; do not drive the car until it's inspected by a mechanic.
If the brake pedal feels soft or goes to the floor, or if the car pulls to one side when braking, have it towed. Driving with a brake system fault is dangerous. If the light is amber and indicates worn brake pads, schedule service soon.
- Release the parking brake completely
- Check brake fluid level
- If low, top off with the correct fluid and inspect for leaks
- If pedal feels abnormal, do not drive; tow to a shop
- If light is amber, check owner's manual for meaning
Common mistakes
- Ignoring the brake light because the car still stops; it could indicate a dangerous leak.
- Assuming it's just the parking brake and not checking the brake fluid.
- Continuing to drive with a soft brake pedal, which can lead to complete brake failure.
