What does the airbag warning light mean?
What the system does
The airbag system uses sensors, a control module and wiring to decide when to deploy airbags and seat belt pretensioners. When the system detects a fault, it turns on a warning light to tell you. The light does not mean the airbags have already deployed.
Common causes include a loose connector under a seat, a faulty clockspring in the steering wheel or a bad crash sensor. Some causes are simple, while others need specialized diagnosis.
- Airbags may not deploy as designed
- Loose seat connectors are a common cause
- The steering wheel clockspring can fail
- Repairs should be done by a qualified shop
What to do
Have the system scanned soon. Airbag codes often need a scan tool that reads the restraint system, which basic readers may not support. Avoid placing objects near the seat or steering wheel while you wait.
If the light flashes or stays on after a restart, do not delay. Ask the shop to show you the stored codes so you know what they found.
- Use a scan tool that reads the airbag system
- Keep items clear of seats and the steering wheel
- Ask the shop to explain stored codes
Common mistakes
- Trying to repair airbag wiring without the proper training or tools.
- Ignoring the light because the car still starts and drives.
- Placing items on the passenger seat that interfere with the sensors.
